What is Assemblage Art…

An artistic form or medium usually created on a defined substrate that consists of three-dimensional elements projecting out of or from the substrate. It is similar to collage, a two-dimensional medium. It is part of the visual arts, it typically uses found objects, but is not limited to these materials. (Wikipedia.com).
I really like the description of assemblage art from the MOCA Museum, especially the part about, “The use of non-art elements or even junk from the real world often gives assemblages a disturbing rawness and sometimes a poetic quality.”

I am naturally drawn to functional mixed media art. I especially like creating upcycled assemblage art using what I call “found junk” — items that were “lost” —-but not after I find them, look at them from a different perspective, and create a place for them in my assemblage piece.

I find “junk” items everywhere— around the house, the yard, garage sales, thrift stores, ANYWHERE! Since we do a lot of crafting projects in our home—there are little bits of ribbon, wire, beads, paper scraps, buttons, charms, etc. all over the place. Assemblage art is perfect for people who feel the need to USE the leftovers from their art in creative, functional ways. I really enjoy looking for random, every day items to merge together into an assemblage piece.

I have always been a lover of the written word. I am naturally drawn to functional mixed media art, especially creating upcycled assemblage art using items I find around the house, the yard, garage sales, thrift stores, ANYWHERE! I am also dedicated to using my art for engaging, creative educational tools. My handmade “Learn Your Letters” alphabet activity tins for children are educational, but also creative. I use a lot of letters, font, and text in my designs and assemblage art.

I love letters because they make up our vocabulary—the words that we speak, read, & write every day. Letters are a part of the ordinary, often taken for granted, masked in the background. Yet, when incorporated into a piece of art, plucked from obscurity, and placed on display, letters become whimsical, fanciful, and uniquely beautiful. The eye is naturally drawn to type because they are ours. Our alphabet. Our letters. Symbols of our vocabulary. We feel we are a part of it, as they are a part of us, of our world, and our culture. Letters have a way of drawing the viewer in the way nothing else can. There is such joy in teaching children a love of vocabulary and language through play and creativity. I LOVE making art out of items other people might call “junk!”
